Assignments

Assignment #4

Due Oct. 6/7
The New Typography Broadside
  1. First, finish reading Lupton's Thinking with Type (pp.112-end).
  2. Redesign Jan Tschichold's broadside, "Die Neue Typographie" using the HTML file I have provided. I am also including here an image of the original for reference and the english translation. You do not have to replicate the design. You may interpret it as you wish. Do not modify the HTML except to add classes to existing elements or divs to provide additional structure. Only use CSS (external stylesheet please) to apply your design.

Materials for Assignment 4

Assignment #3

Due Sept. 22/23
Typography and Layout with CSS
  1. First, read pp.62-103 in Lupton's Thinking with Type.
  2. Download the HTML template from the Digital Dropbox on BlackBoard.
  3. Create a file called "alignment.html" and re-create the 4 blocks on text shown on pp. 84-85. Make the background #eef3c1 and make 4 text blocks 500px wide, centered on the page, and with a white background. Use Georgia as the text face. Set all typography using the proper HTML tags and style with CSS. (You do not need to set the text on the pale green background.) Set each block of text separately, stacked on top of each other (with vertical space separating each one).

Assignment #2

Due Sept. 15/16
The Bill of Rights

Download the above text file and mark it up using only the HTML tags we learned today. You should only need to use the following tags:

  • html
  • head
  • body
  • h1 - h6
  • p
  • ol
  • li

I will be checking the HTML markup -- not the visual design of it. If you feel comfortable with this assignment, you may go ahead and apply whatever styling you wish in CSS. Do NOT put styling in the HTML tags.

Call the file "billofrights.html" and upload the file to BlackBoard.

Assignment #1

Due Sept. 8/9

Assignment: Bring in your favorite publication (can be a website or even DVD). On the blog, write a post about what the target audience is, how many and what kind of readers it reaches, how often it is issued, the form factor (size), the media, the cost, and the level of interaction with readers (letters to the editor, comments, etc), the visual design and typography. Include photographs or screenshots if applicable. If you have trouble completing this assignment, email me as soon as possible and I will try to help.

In Class: Each student will discuss his/her favorite publication.

Technical Discussion: HTML crash course, Part I. What is HTML? How does it work? What is CSS? What can I do with it? Please bring your laptops to class.

Assignment, Due Sept. 16: Hierarchy exercise, Lupton p.94.

Reading for Sept. 16: Thinking with Type, Lupton, pp. 13 -57.
